Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” is a culmination of his career feedback loops. It combines elements of his sci-fi works, offering a new song. Despite some flaws, it’s a hopeful exploration of humanity’s ability to accept the unknown.
Set as a spiritual sequel to “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” the film focuses on the suppressed knowledge of UFOs. Daniel Kellner, a whistleblower, flees from WARDEX with data on alien contact. He may be an “Experiencer,” connecting him to Margaret Fairchild, who gains strange powers after a bird encounter.
Most of the movie is a thrilling chase as they evade WARDEX. Spielberg’s action sequences are top-notch, with high-speed chases and nods to his past works. The film also has a humanistic thread, trying to bridge cynicism and hope.
Despite uneven plot beats and a long runtime, “Disclosure Day” is engaging. The characters are well-played, and it presents a clear good-versus-bad narrative. Its message, “Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know,” sums up its hopeful view of humanity.
